Meet the Team

Robin Thieme is Founder, CEO and CAO (Chief Anticipation Officer)

With over 30 years of financial and accounting experience, a passion for the efficiencies that new technologies enable, and a dedication to small businesses, Robin, supported by the KBS team, provides strategic guidance and system-based solutions to entrepreneurs.

Long before “cloud computing” was a mainstream term, Robin built her own company, KBS, as a virtual organization. She takes this same thoughtful approach to establishing efficiencies and solutions that fit the current business environment for her clients.

KBS provides outsourced CFO and accounting solutions, eCommerce, and virtual organization advisory expertise to startups (including Lean/Agile Start Ups), those in the eCommerce, manufacturing, professional service, and general contracting industries. Robin is an anticipatory accountant that provides advisory services to her clients while building sustainable, growing, profitable, and scalable businesses.

Robin had earned designations from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), including Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA), Certified Information Technology Professional (CITP), and Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Recent certifications include Certified Intacct Service Provider, PlanGuru Advisor, and Certified LivePlan Expert. Robin is an active member of the Maryland Association of CPAs (MACPA) and a frequent speaker on accounting technology trends and tools. Her expertise coupled with decades of first-hand knowledge about the unique challenges faced by small businesses, enables her to serve as your trusted strategic advisor.

When Robin isn’t working at KBS, she is enjoying walks in the woods with her dog Jackson and trying to keep up with her millennial young adult children. She can also be found enjoying her favorite Malbec, or whatever beer the KBS Clients are producing this month.

Ilana Knab, Accounting Manager and IT Director

Ilana joined KBS in the spring of 2008. She currently provides financial management services for several clients. Ilana also provides technical support to both KBS clients and staff, assisting with various hardware and software installations. She brought to KBS years of experience in benefits consulting and defined contribution plan administration. Ilana lives in Bethesda, MD where she enjoys spending her spare time with her family (husband, four kids, two cats, one dog), scrapbooking and knitting.


Rita Klein, Accounting Manager

Rita has worked for Kensington Business Solutions since the fall of 2004. She is responsible for all areas relating to financial reporting for the clients she serves. She has been the Financial Manager for several of our clients in many industries including real estate management, food services, consulting, and health related fields. Rita is responsible for the initial set up of new clients and trains and supervises administrative staff members who work directly for our clients. Rita has an MBA with a concentration in Accounting from the University of Maryland. She lives in Kensington with her family. When not working at KBS, Rita stays busy as the President of her synagogue, and planning her daughter’s wedding.

Patti Ribas, Accounting Manager

Patti has worked for Kensington Business Solutions since the spring of 2010. Her responsibilities include financial reporting, cash flow forecasting, and supervision of bookkeepers for several clients. She is a CPA with extensive experience in a large international public accounting firm and worked in a variety of industries including real estate, construction, entertainment, not-for-profit and hi-tech companies. Her clients ranged in size from small, closely-held organizations to large publically traded companies. Patti brings a wealth of knowledge to the KBS team. Along with her husband and three sons, Patti resides in Laytonsville, MD. In her free time, Patti enjoys working out, spending time with her family, watching sports (Go Nats!) and going to concerts.

Karen Castle, Accounting Manager
Karen joined the KBS team in September 2017 and provides financial management services for several clients. Karen began her career as a database analyst and later changed her focus to accounting and HR.  Karen is a CPA and has served as the controller for several consulting firms.  Karen lives in Olney, Maryland with her husband and three children.  In her free time, Karen enjoys searching for the perfect cocktail and watching documentary films.
Sandy Felton, Accounting Manager

Amy Oristian, Senior Transaction Specialist

Amy has worked for KBS since September 2009. She provides financial services for several clients. Amy is also instrumental in training new employees, as well as handling many KBS administrative activities. She brings years of experience in banking and financial services to KBS. Amy lives in Rockville with her husband and two sons.  While Amy lives in Rockville with her husband and two sons, she is embracing a fairly recent “empty nest”. She now has time to travel and spends as much time as possible on the water. Amy and her husband enjoy entertaining friends at home, especially around the fire pit! This provides the perfect setting to research her next favorite cocktail. The testing continues…….


Diana Farina-Borlas, Transaction Specialist

Diana joined KBS in the summer of 2010. She provides financial management services and technical support for several clients. She brought to KBS over 10 years of experience in regional planning and economic and demographic analysis. Diana lives in Kensington with her husband and two children, and together they’re attempting to hike in all of the National Parks. When she’s not working, Diana enjoys knitting, gardening (harvested popcorn and potatoes), playing the ukulele, and sipping on prosecco.


Lara Sprenger, Transaction Specialist

Lara joined the KBS team in September 2016. She provides a wide variety of accounting solutions for KBS clients, including accounting system installation and set up, training and support. Prior to joining KBS, Lara worked as the Controller/HR Director for a start-up social media company. Previous endeavors include Controller/HR Director at Access Funding as well as Deputy Network Director for DARPA. She has a Master of Science degree in accounting and finance from the University of Maryland. Lara lives in Kensington with her husband and four children, and loves making plans with them to travel everywhere in the world, at least once! So far, Nashville is her favorite destination for its music and amazing food.

Helena Finnegan, SoGo Manager

Helena joined the team in July 2013. Her career experience is in Customer Service. She has worked in both the retail and corporate environments. Helena provides transactional and research support for KBS clients. In addition, she manages the SOGO facility. She lives in Kensington with her husband and two children. When she can escape from KBS for a bit, you’ll find Helena enjoying a good book or indulging in a yummy dessert. She also just recently obtained her second citizenship as a Dutch citizen!

Sarah Ziemann, Administrative and Sales Support

Sarah joined the KBS team in the spring of 2016, and supports the CEO and client service team, assisting in sales relationships and business development processes. She offers experience in networking, sales, event planning, community outreach, social media campaign development and implementation, and marketing, as well as administrative and client service skills. Sarah is knowledgeable in increasing brand awareness and expanding business networks both regionally and globally. She enjoys cultivating and maintaining client and business relationships, and fully understands the importance of providing immediate and complete responses to client requests. Sarah lives in Columbia with her husband and school-aged twins. Apart from KBS, Sarah is a Healthy Living Strategist, helping others get into shape as a Fit Body Boot Camp trainer and Nutrition Coach. When she successfully escapes the nightly homework battles amongst her angelic children, she enjoys running (away), cooking, and sipping on her favorite glass (or 3) of Malbec.
